Scholarships

In service of its mission to promote the health and fitness of the youth of Santa Cruz County through the promotion of running,  Wharf to Wharf Race  Inc. annually awards scholarships to four graduating high school seniors who have distinguished themselves in running and the classroom.

Howard Marcus Memorial Scholarships

Two scholarships are awarded each year since 1989, one to a boy and one to a girl in memory of Howard Marcus, a  longtime member of the Wharf to Wharf Race organizing committee, family man, basketball coach, fine attorney, author and patron of youth track & field. In 1983 Howard founded the Star Track Club, precursor to today’s Santa Cruz Track Club. He was among those who dared early to dream of an all-weather track in Santa Cruz County and found a way  to build the first at Soquel High School in 1986.

Howard Marcus Scholarships in amount $3,000 per year, renewable for four years, are payable to the four-year college or university of the awardee’s election, on behalf of the awardee in good standing. Applicants for this scholarship must be Santa Cruz County residents, post a minimum 3.0 high school GPA, have track & field or cross country high school running experience  and plans to continue participation  one of these sports at a four-year college or university.

Applications must be received no later than April 30.

Otis Chandler Memorial Scholarships

Since 2006, Wharf to Wharf Race Inc. has awarded two-year college scholarships each year to two graduating Santa Cruz County high school boys and girls. These scholarships commemorate Otis Chandler, a world class track & field athlete, and early advocate of strength training and USA Olympic Team qualifier who rose to journalistic acclaim as publisher of the Los Angeles Times. A lifelong health and fitness aficionado, he often cited the lessons learned as a student-athlete for his personal and professional success.  Accordingly, the scholarships awarded in his name are intended to encourage their recipients to continue pursuit of track & field or cross country participation during the first two years of their collegiate life.

Otis Chandler Scholarships in amount $3,000 per year, renewable for two years, are payable to the college or university of the awardee’s election, on behalf of the awardee in good standing. Applicants must attend and graduate from a Santa Cruz County high school, have participated in track & field or cross country, and have been accepted into a two or four-year institution of higher learning and have a commitment to lifetime fitness.
